ALTERNATIVE INSTRUMENTAL AMERICANA

Richard Lewis McLane is a composer / songwriter from the American Deep South. His exposure to multiple musical traditions from American roots music to rock to classical has infused his music with an eclectic blend of musical styles. Regardless of what label you want to attach to this music, we hope you enjoy listening!

The wide range of musical influences has given the music of RLM a distinctive flavor. From Americana come elements of traditional musical styles such as folk, blues, gospel, bluegrass, and country. The weary exisentialism of the blues mirrors social circumstances that deny many individuals their personhood. On the other hand, classical music's emphasis on clarity and simplicity brings a fresh air of optimism. And the proliferation of rock styles from the late 1960's into the early 1970's pushed the boundaries of what is possible when different styles of music unite and enrich each other.

RLM has always been fascinated by the instrumental colors possible with various combinations of instruments and their power to create moving experiences for the listener. One of his earliest memories is of playing his dad's record album of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" on a toy record player. Needless to say his dad wasn't too pleased but the album wasn't damaged! Instrumental music allows the characteristic sound of each instrument to blend and complement the other instruments. Paradoxically sometimes words can get in the way of communication. Pure sound has the power to express every conceivable reality from the surreal to the highest aspirations of humankind. Music gives voice to the human story and provides nourishment for the human soul.

Music can also serve a down-to-earth social function. All art takes place within a sociopolitical environment. Within society, it is the people who hold the greatest promise to shape their future. We are currently witnessing a surge of creative power as many individuals and groups work together for positive social change. Music reflects and encourages these aspirations of the human spirit for all people to live together in a cooperative and supportive manner. This is folk music's message of freedom and hope.

As everyone is aware, American society is going through a turbulent period of unrest. Philosophy tells us that the aim of society is the wellbeing of its people. From this simple truth flow the basic concepts that would help bring people together. The goal is to develop a supportive social structure for communities as well as individuals that benefits everyone equally and allows each person the freedom to construct the life they envision.
